Logical Possibility vs. Metaphysical Possibility — What's the Difference?

Logical possibility is grounded in the principles of logic, focusing on whether a proposition can be true without leading to a contradiction. This domain is strictly bound by logical coherence, meaning that if something can exist or happen without violating the laws of logic, it is considered logically possible. While Metaphysical possibility goes beyond mere logical consistency to consider the broader scope of what could exist or happen in any possible world, considering the nature and properties of things. It asks whether something could exist in some conceivable reality, taking into account the fundamental nature of objects and the universe.

A proposition is logically possible if it can be formulated without entailing a logical contradiction, such as "a square circle" which is logically impossible. Logical possibility is concerned with the structure and consistency of concepts within the framework of logic. Whereas, a metaphysical possibility might involve scenarios that, while not contradicting logical laws, delve into the essence of existence and identity, considering whether such scenarios could actually manifest given the properties and relations of entities involved.

Logical possibility is a narrower concept than metaphysical possibility. All metaphysically possible scenarios are logically possible, but not all logically possible scenarios are metaphysically possible.
