Chubby is commonly used to describe a slightly overweight condition in a person or a specific body part that appears plump and full. On the other hand, chub can refer to either a type of thick-bodied freshwater fish found in many rivers and lakes or colloquially to a human's round, full face. The use of chubby often carries a mild, affectionate connotation when referring to the soft, rounded features of babies or young children, whereas chub, when used to describe a person’s face, also tends to imply roundness but is less commonly used and typically lacks the same affectionate tone.

Chubby primarily serves as an adjective in everyday language, applied to individuals, animals, or body parts that exhibit softness and a lack of sharp angles. In contrast, chub is a noun that denotes a specific genus of fish known for their girth and size; however, it transforms into an adjective informally when describing someone with a notably round face.
