Confab vs. Conflab — What's the Difference?

Confab, a term deriving from "confabulation," typically denotes an informal, private conversation or chat among people. It implies a friendly, relaxed dialogue where ideas or gossip might be exchanged. This term is often used in both professional and social contexts to describe conversations that are not necessarily goal-oriented but serve to build relationships or share information. On the other hand, conflab, while essentially serving the same purpose as confab and often considered a variant of it, is less frequently used and may appear more in dialectal English or informal settings. Both terms imply casual, sometimes impromptu, discussions, yet confab is the more recognized term in standard English.

The origin of confab lies in the Latin "confabulatio," pointing to its roots in conversation and dialogue. Conflab, however, might be perceived as a colloquial or even a corrupted form of confab, lacking a distinct etymological pathway separate from confabulation. Despite their slight differences in usage and frequency, both terms encapsulate the essence of informal talking, whether for leisure, brainstorming, or casual catch-ups.

In usage, confab may appear in literature, formal writing, or in the context of meetings that are laid-back yet might have an underpinning of purpose or agenda. Conflab, by contrast, leans more towards very informal exchanges and is less likely to be found in written or formal contexts, aligning more with spoken English and informal communications.
