Delhi vs. New Delhi — What's the Difference?

Delhi and New Delhi are terms often used interchangeably, but they indicate distinct entities. Delhi refers to the National Capital Territory (NCT) of Delhi, which is a region in northern India that contains multiple districts. New Delhi, on the other hand, is one such district within Delhi and is notably the capital of both the state and the nation.

Historically, the region known as Delhi has witnessed the rise and fall of numerous empires. The city has been rebuilt multiple times across different locations, with each version often referred to by a unique name. New Delhi, however, is the latest and current rendition, constructed during British colonial rule. Edwin Lutyens and Herbert Baker designed it, leading to the Lutyens' Delhi we hear of, which is part of New Delhi.

While Delhi encapsulates a vast area with varied neighborhoods, markets, and historical sites, New Delhi is more centralized, focusing on the administrative and governmental functions of India. Most of the central government buildings, embassies, and official residences are located in New Delhi.

From a traveler's perspective, Delhi offers a rich tapestry of history, culture, and modernity. It provides a blend of ancient monuments, bustling bazaars, and contemporary infrastructures. New Delhi, specifically, impresses with its wide, tree-lined avenues, iconic landmarks like India Gate, and the grand Rashtrapati Bhavan (Presidential Residence).
