Horsepower vs. Cc — What's the Difference?

Horsepower is a unit of measurement, denoting the power an engine produces. The term originated from comparing the power of steam engines to that of draft horses. Cc, which stands for cubic centimeters, is a metric unit that describes the displacement or the volume of the engine cylinders. While Horsepower speaks to how powerful an engine is, Cc talks about its size or capacity.

Engines with larger Cc values usually have more cylinders or larger cylinders, allowing for more air and fuel to be combusted, potentially generating more power. However, Horsepower is the direct measure of this power output. So, an engine's Cc value can give an idea of its potential Horsepower, but other factors like efficiency, design, and fuel type also play crucial roles.

In automobile contexts, consumers often consider both Horsepower and Cc when evaluating vehicle performance. While higher Horsepower generally indicates faster acceleration and higher top speeds, larger Cc values might hint at the potential for such power, although they don't guarantee it. One cannot directly derive Horsepower from Cc, as two engines with the same Cc might deliver different Horsepower due to design differences.
