Natal vs. Birthday — What's the Difference?

The term "natal" is often used in contexts relating to birth or the circumstances surrounding it. It can be associated with various aspects of birth, such as natal care (care given during pregnancy), natal charts (in astrology, a chart representing the positions of the planets at the time of one's birth), and natal homelands (places of origin). On the other hand, a "birthday" specifically refers to the annual commemoration of the day on which a person was born. It is celebrated by many cultures around the world with various traditions, such as parties, gifts, and special rituals.

While "natal" can have broader applications beyond personal birth events, often used in scientific, medical, or astrological contexts, "birthday" is a more personal and widely recognized term, associated with celebration and personal milestones. Natal aspects might refer to conditions or attributes inherent from birth, like natal teeth (teeth present at birth) or natal promises in astrology, whereas birthdays focus on the cyclical recognition of one's age and life journey.

In medical or biological contexts, "natal" is used to describe phenomena related to birth. Conversely, "birthday" in such contexts would merely denote the specific day of birth, without implying broader biological or medical connotations.
