Provisional vs. Temporary — What's the Difference?

Provisional arrangements are often made with the understanding that they will be replaced or finalized in the future. These can include provisional laws, agreements, or plans that are subject to confirmation or ratification. On the other hand, temporary arrangements or items are specifically intended for short-term use and are expected to end or be replaced after a certain period.

While both provisional and temporary can describe situations or solutions not meant to be permanent, provisional often carries a connotation of awaiting a more permanent or finalized decision. For example, a provisional government may be established until a formal government can be instituted, suggesting a step toward something more definitive. In contrast, temporary solutions, like a temporary job or housing, are understood to be in place only for a limited period, with no implication of being part of a process toward something more lasting.

Provisional measures might be seen as placeholders, allowing for the continuation of operations or processes until a final decision or arrangement is made. Temporary measures, however, are typically employed to address an immediate need or fill a gap during a transitory period, with a clear understanding of their limited duration.
