PSP Original vs. PSP Slim — What's the Difference?

Launched in 2004, the PSP Original introduced handheld gaming with high-quality graphics, multimedia capabilities, and internet connectivity, setting a new standard for portable entertainment devices. It featured a large 4.3-inch screen, stereo speakers, and the ability to play games from UMDs (Universal Media Discs), as well as movies and music.

The PSP Slim (PSP-2000) arrived in 2007, addressing some of the original's limitations. It retained the core functionality while making significant improvements: the device was 33% lighter and 19% slimmer than its predecessor, enhancing portability. The Slim also introduced a brighter screen, doubled the RAM from 32MB to 64MB for better game performance and faster load times, and offered TV-out capabilities, allowing games and videos to be played on a television screen.

Battery life was a focus of the redesign. The PSP Slim's more efficient components and the option to use a higher-capacity battery extended its use time. However, this model removed the infrared port present in the PSP Original, which was seldom used by most gamers.

Both models support the extensive PSP game library, but the PSP Slim's additional RAM and other improvements provide a smoother gaming experience and quicker menu navigation. The choice between the two often comes down to personal preference for design and specific feature priorities, such as portability versus the original's slightly more rugged feel.
